JULY 2010 LONG RANGE LEVER MATCH SCORES - CLICK HERE

The Long Range Lever Rifle Match was held Saturday, July 10th. Weather out at the range was beautiful, and the temperature was even pretty nice too. Not hot at all. Attendence was kinda slim though – only 4 shooters – but we made a match out of it anyway. Jim Secrist came out on top with three center hits at 500 yards. Jim Smith was second, and still shooting his Browning SRC with the stock ladder sight (don't know how he does it!)

Again, the weather decided to cooperate with us. Saturday was a little overcast, but Sunday turned out to be very warm and beautiful.

Regarding the scores, you will note that Jim Smith took a "No Score" in the Buffalo Match. The reason for this is that he confided in me that he was shooting a test load with a duplex of smokeless which is not allowed. So he decided that his score for the Buffalo portion of the aggregate would not count. You all will remember that only loads of straight black power or black powder substitute, and plain based cast bullets are allowed.

BUFFALO: Daryl Butler shot an 18 out of 20 which tied the range record previously shot by his partner, Terry Phillips. Ken McIntosh won the shootoff for 2nd place in the Buffalo Match, and Ken Meyers picked up 3rd.

CREEDMORE: Kevin McDonald came up from Las Vegas to win with a score of 46 and 17 center hits. Jim Smith came in 2nd with a 44 and 15 centers, and Jim Wiley (as in coyote) took 3rd with a socre of 40 and 15 centers.

GRIZZLY: Sunday we shot the Grizzly match, and Jim Smith pretty much spanked everyone, HARD! He shot a great score of 65 and 6 centers out of a possible 70 and 10 centers. That is only one miss at the 200 yard off-hand target, and only 4 hits on the 500 yard target were not centers. That's some pretty good shooting. (What load were you using Jim?) Terry Phillips came in 2nd with a score of 57 and 3 centers, and Ken Meyers came in 3rd also with a score of 57 and 4 centers. However, this tie was broken by the 200yd off-hand scores, and Terry had 7 hits on the 200 yard off-hand target to Ken's 4.

TOP GUN AWARD: Overall Terry Phillips won with an aggregate score of 110. Good Shooting, Terry!

We hope to see you all out at the next match in September, and don't forget the Long Range Lever Rifle match on July 10th.

MAY 2010 HUNTER RIFLE MATCH - Get pictures HERE, and scores HERE.

Our first Hunter Rifle Steel Match at the Golden Spike Buffalo Range got off to a great start. We only had 10 shooters, but we did have an excellent shoot. Scott Grange, the Browning PR guy, won the match with a score of 54 3X with an A-Bolt Mtn Ti in .270WSM. Marcus Heath, a Browning QA Engineer, took Second shooting a 54 1X with a X-Bolt in .300WSM. Nick Schafer, a Browning R&D Engineer came in third with a score of 51 4X shooting another X-Bolt in .300WSM. (Hmm, do I see some kind of trend here? Nahh!) Anyway, the course proved to have challenges for everyone. Targets ranged from the Prairie Dog at 118 yards to the Bull Elk at 618 yards. Andrew Chamberlain thought that the off-hand pig at position 3 was too tough, and offered a $20 prize to the first shooter who hit it. Of course that was too much. Nick hit it twice, and won a copy of Andrew's book, Cartridge Comparison Guide, for his efforts. The course was so much fun Jim Secrist and I stayed out and shot it again on Sunday morning.

I guess the weather forecast scared the lightweights off. The weather actually turned out to be OK. It was breezy and a bit cool, and there were broken clouds for the match. However, that's why they call them "weather guessers", and we've learned over the years that you can't expect the weather along the Wasatch to match what's going on out at Promontory. So, in the future, if you have any doubts give us a call out at the range. I'll give you our cell phone numbers if you want them.
